Berry College Chapel is the third chapel painting in my Berry Collection and is located in the heart of the Berry College Campus. It was designed by architect Harry Carlson and built by students in 1915. The beautiful design was inspired by Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Just to the South of this historic chapel, the beloved founder of the college, Martha Berry is buried. An eternal flame illuminates her beloved verse, “…NOT TO BE MINISTERED UNTO BUT TO MINISTER.” This is the Berry College Motto. The beautiful spire against the Berry blue sky continues to echo those sentiments reflected in the motto. The autumn foliage can scarcely express the beauty of a sprawling 27,000 acre campus of forests, fields, rugged cabins, majestic chapels, Gothic stone castles, and numerous marble-colonnade neo-classical buildings. This campus chapel has witnessed many joyous occasions of weddings, graduations, and Sunday celebrations for over a century. May this painting recall to mind those treasured memories and experiences we shared during our time at Berry College. I hope the painting will remind us of Martha Berry’s school motto.
