About the Artist

Horst A Trojahn

Horst A Trojahn

As an immigrant from Europe, early impressions of art came from my father, a realist landscape artist and an accomplished architect.  Beyond my dad, I was greatly influenced by the fine work of  British artist, Robert Wood. I was also very drawn to artist/illustrator Norman Rockwell for his ability to communicate stories through his art.  Since moving to the Pee Dee region, visiting art galleries, the Piccolo Spoleto open-air artist exhibit, I have been inspired to study the coastal areas, salt marshes, and swamps.  I enjoy using the palette knife to layer colors, form shapes, and depth in my ocean scenes.  I love using oils because of their versatility to create new techniques.  Even the consistency of the paint can inspire amazing techniques and effects.

Back to my roots, I am definitely a landscape realist, with hopes of learning to incorporate some impressionistic style.  Art is a story, a feeling, an inspiration to convey, and contribute.  The most worthy contribution of my art is not the focus of talent and technique, but rather the contribution I can make to the viewer of the art.  I want my art to be an encouragement, a blessing, and a good experience. "….whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things".
